There is magic.  Real magic.  You can do it and I can do it.  Magic is not unique or elitist, or reserved for those with special mystical blood.  Magic is as common as dirt.

What is rootwork?

Rootwork, also known as hoodoo and conjure, is a form of folk magic brought to the United States by African men and women sold into slavery in the southern US.  Its roots can be found especially among the Congo tribes.  Over the centuries it acquired influences from Native American herbal and magical practices, the Spiritist tradition, Western European ceremonial magic, and the Jewish mystical tradition of the Kabbalah.

Rootwork is not a religion.  This point cannot be stressed strongly enough.  It is not Voudou, Santeria, or any other African Diasporic religion.  It is a system of magical practice.  One can be of any religion or no religion and still practice rootwork successfully.  There are definitely similarities between rootwork and some practices in what has become known as New Orleans Voodoo (not Haitian Voudou), but rootwork's history can be traced back all over the southern United States, not just New Orleans.  That said, historically most rootworkers have been Christian, and there is a lot of work with the Psalms and other scriptural writings in hoodoo.  As cat yronwode, rootworker extraordinaire and author of Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic, advises potential rootworkers, "[I]f you are uncomfortable with the Bible - even if only as a form of symbolism and not as a matter of faith and conviction - it's time to relax and get comfortable."

For a much more in-depth exploration of hoodoo/rootwork, I strongly encourage you to read cat yronwode's Hoodoo in Theory and Practice.

What services do I offer?

As a new graduate of cat yronwode's Lucky Mojo Hoodoo Rootwork Course, I only feel proficient enough at this point to work simple spells for such intentions as love, health, prosperity, blessings, road opening, uncrossing, protection, etc.  I will take on more complicated work on a case-by-case basis.

My specialty, however, is candle work, or "setting lights."  I consider myself blessed in the spiritual altar work department and have become quite a successful candle worker.  I will be more than happy to set a light for your intention for a nominal fee.  This practice consists of dressing a glass-encased 7-day candle of a corresponding color with the spiritual oil appropriate to your petition, praying over it, placing your written petition beneath it, and burning the candle on my altar continuously (while I'm awake!) along with some appropriate incense, until the candle has been completely burned (this takes about a week to 10 days).  The candle is constantly reinforced with additional prayer throughout the burning process.  When the burning is complete, I check back in with you to let you know how the burn went and give you additional feedback, and also to hear from you what might have occurred in your life regarding your petition as the candle burned.  Please see the Lucky Mojo hoodoo candle magic page for more information.

What is a "lady-hearted" rootworker?

You are probably wondering about the "lady-hearted" thing!  A lady-hearted rootworker will not perform negative or harmful magic.  I am happy to work spells for love, luck, money/prosperity, protection, uncrossing/unjinxing, healing, and even good fortune at the blackjack tables.  I will not burn a DUME ("Death Unto My Enemy") candle on your enemy's name, curse your enemy so that he wastes away and dies, or work any sort of spell that might cause serious injury, illness and/or death.  I also will not help you steal someone else's man/woman, just because you want them.

However......

This gives me a chance to talk about my own framework of spell-working ethics.

I do not follow any "rule of three" or strict "karmic retribution" laws.  I have no compunctions whatsoever about jinxing rapists, abusers of those who cannot defend themselves, and/or murderers who have not been caught and are still at large in the general population.  That is not "negative or harmful magic" - that is protection, self-defense and an adjunct to the wheels of justice (and, if I may be so bold, karma in action).

I will not perform a break-up spell simply because you desire one of the partners involved.  Sorry, but that don't fly in my world.  However, if a friend or loved one is involved in an abusive relationship and is having trouble leaving, and all other avenues have been exhausted and there is no possible hope of healing the relationship, then I would not hesitate to work a break-up spell, if only for the well-being of the one being abused and help and/or incarceration for the abuser.

In all my spellwork and spiritual altar work, I add this condition to all prayers and petitions:  "...if my case be justified in Your sight, O Lord."  And I always ask that if it not be justified, another way to approach the problem be revealed to me.  Learning to work in harmony with the Universe is key!
